Poetry contest for students in praise of mulberries

Winners for the first Mulberry Poetry Contest will be announced at the annual Mulberry Madness festival at the Waverly Market, Charles Village, Saturday, June 20.

Talented young poets from around the city participated with poems in a range of genres. All displayed a love for the mulberry, as a find of childhood.

Baltimore Orchard Project is offering prizes and trees for the best entries.

In line with BOP’s dedication to sustainability, this contest focuses on one of the least appreciated trees in our city. The mulberry tree gets a bad rap for splatting on the street, but few appreciate its value—for nutrition, food and shade, among other things.

First place winner for high school will receive$100 plus a native fruit tree of their choice for their home or school.

Elementary school/middle school entry will get $50 for first place, pluse a fruit tree of their choice.

Spread the word to your young friends
